What is Motion Blur?

When a moving object is captured on film or digital video is is blurred somewhat. Take a look at the picture on the right. The top picture has motion blur as the green ball is moving to the right. The picture below has has no motion blur and the scene appears rigid and static.

Which scenes benefit from motion blur?
Bryce renders every image crystal sharp. This is true for every frame of animation resulting in jumpy and unrealistic motion. In single pictures objects should look moving fast just appear to "hang in the air". So even when creating single pictures applying motion blur adds realism.
